Ukraine turns lard into fuel

Published 29 April, 2008, 03:23

The way to a Ukrainian's heart is lard, a traditional part of the country's national cuisine. But now it has a new use. It's being processed to become diesel for agricultural vehicles.

Taking pig fat for fuel considerably cuts expenses and is an alternative to commonly used fuels.

Raw fat is in huge supply in the country since pork is a major part of Ukrainian food production.

The biggest drawback is the new diesel can only be used in summer time, since cold temperatures turn it back into a solid lard-like substance.

The inventors hope to be using the new pig eco-diesel in combination with common fuels to make running vehicles cheaper.
