Ice hockey: Ovechkin to play at World Championship

Ice hockey’s equivalent of the World Cup, the World Championship, kicks off in Quebec on Friday and Aleksandr Ovechkin's involvement is a major boost for the Russian team.

The Hockey Federation now has to make sure they've got $US 660,000 to pay for insurance. Until then the Washington player, star of the U.S. NHL, can't even get acquainted with his Russian teammates.

“At the moment I can't train on the ice, so I just do weights and cycle in the gym. But I hope they'll finish all the details in two days and I'll join the team,” Ovechkin said.

With Ovechkin joining the squad, coach Vyacheslav Bykov had to lose four other players, including Nikolay Kulyomin, who had a good club season, leading Metallurg to the Superleague final.
