Russian football: Rubin Kazan still unstoppable

Published 28 April, 2008, 19:09

A draw helped Lokomotiv climb to second spot in the Russian Premier League table. They are now level on points with Dynamo, but have a better goal difference. However, the leaders, Rubin Kazan, are seven points ahead after a victory in Moscow.

Dynamo 0–2 Rubin

Week 7 in the Russia’s Premier League started with a game between the only two sides yet to lose a game this season.

Georgian defender Dato Kvirkeliya opened the scoring for Rubin 28 minutes into the first half. Still in the first half, Rubin’s captain Sergey Semak doubled the lead for his team.

Luch Energia 1–3 CSKA

The hosts found their feet on a pudding of a pitch first, Sergey Bulyga smashing home a gorgeous free-kick just after the twenty-minute mark.

But the Muscovites pulled level within two minutes. The Brazilian Jo scored the header that turned the game.

The conditions were becoming increasingly farcical but Jo was able to set up the ball for Vagner Love, who scored at the back post.

After half time the conditions might have suited water polo better than football and Evgeny Aldonin’s shot deflected and looped over the home goalkeeper.

Amkar 2–0 Shinnik

The Perm side were 2-0 winners over third from bottom Shinnik, with striker Predrag Sikimic scoring both goals in the second half. The second came from a free-kick

Khimki 1–0 Krlya Sovetov

Khimki got their first win of the season beating Krylya Sovetov.

The only goal came after 39 minutes with Artyom Radkov's shot.

Tom 0–1 Saturn

Yan Duritsa's goal was the difference in the Tom versus Saturn match. The Slovakian defender scored for Saturn 31 minutes in.

Tom have thus been unable to defeat Saturn at home since debuting in Russia's elite division in 2005.

Spartak 1–1 FC Moscow

Spartak clinched their second win of the season last week at Nalchik and seemed to be well on the way to their third when Aleksandr Pavlenko made good use of goalkeeper Yury Zhevnov’s blunder ten minutes into the second half.

But the under-achieving visitors, who are still to win a game this season, were able to pull level through Hektor Brakamonte,  the Argentinian brilliantly nodding in Pyotr Bystrov's cross.

Lokomotiv 0–0 Spartak Nalchik

All the main events of Railway boys’ encounter with Nalchik took place in stoppage time. First, Gogita Gogua of the visiting team was sent off.

Second, Lokomotiv got a chance to finally open the scoring from a penalty after a handball in Nalchik’s box, but Peter Odemvingie’s shot was saved by Dmitry Khomich.

Zenit – Terek has been postponed until July 1.
