War flames back to Russian streets

The orange-and-black striped St. George ribbon, symbolising the smoke and flames of war, is an integral part of Russia's V-Day celebrations. For the next 16 days student volunteers will be distributing them freely as a symbol of the country's victory in WW2.
The initiative first came in 2005 as an attempt to unite the generations in remembrance of this particular period in history and has proved to be quite successful.
In four years 20 million have made their way throughout Russia under the motto “I remember and I'm proud!” and went further to Europe, the Middle East, Australia and America.
The St. George ribbon dates back to Tsarist Russia, where it was part of the order of St. George, the highest possible military decoration. During World War Two it became part of several Soviet military awards, including the Medal for Victory over the Germans.
