‘Real’ Russian women on show

Published 24 April, 2008, 10:09

Twenty women from across Russia have been chosen for a photography exhibition with a difference in Moscow. “Women out of Format” highlights the beauty of ordinary women instead of professional models.

“The idea of the project was born when I was shopping about three months ago. I saw a woman who was trying on a dress and it didn't fit, so she asked the saleswoman for a different size, but the woman replied with ”nothing's going to fit, you're out of format what do you expect?“ So, with this exhibition we decided to encourage women and that they should not follow the generally accepted standards of beauty,” Nona Peres, the exhibition organiser, said.

All the women on the pictures are fortune-telling using cards.

The artist believes that the photos have more character without professional models.

“Sometimes its better women don't know anything about posing. Models know their best shooting angles, they don't always look natural. I was trying to show more human side of women, not made up characters, but real people,” Vladimir Klavikho-Telepnev, the painter and photographer, said.

The exhibition is being shown at Moscow's Vinzavod Centre of Modern Art.
