Bloody mess: is tennis star Youzhny losing it?

Published 04 April, 2008, 11:45

Mikhail Youzhny's coach, Boris Sobkin, says his player is having a crisis and not ready for Russia's Davis Cup quarter-final with the Czech Repuiblic next week.

Youzhny made the news at the Miami Masters earlier in the week when he beat his head with a tennis racket, reacting to an unforced error while playing against Nicolas Almagro.

Although he went on to win the match, Sobkin says the world number eleven is undergoing a deep psychological crisis and is not fit for the Davis Cup tie.

Team captain Shamil Tarpischev, meanwhile, insists it’s a lot of fuss over nothing, saying he's just an emotional player.

Tarpischev's named Youzhny in his preliminary squad for the upcoming tie, when Russia take on the Czech Republic starting next Friday in Moscow.
