Basketball: Dynamo Moscow star nets Russian passport

Published 01 April, 2008, 09:47

Playing pro basketball seems to be the easiest way to earn Russian citizenship. Following in the footsteps of CSKA stars JR Holden and Becky Hammon Dynamo, shooting guard Travis Hansen is the latest star to receive a red passport.

In September 2007, JR Holden became a national hero, hitting the game-winning shot at the European Championships final against Spain. Holden had been given Russian citizenship because of the country’s lack of quality point guards, and the move proved to be right.

Recently, CSKA ladies team point guard and WNBA star, Becky Hammon, went through the same procedure in order to represent Russia at the Olympics.

Brigham Young University product Travis Hansen has been with Dynamo for two years now. He forms a dynamic backcourt duo with Henry Domecant, and is one of the key pieces for the other Moscow basketball club.

Recently, the news of Hansen getting Russian citizenship became official; he now has a red passport.

According to FIBA regulations, only one naturalised citizen is allowed in a national team. Holden's spot on the team was never in question, but Hansen will serve as a solid back-up.
