Fresh mandarins or tangerines are an essential part of the New Year in Russia, and most families make sure they have plenty in stock for the holiday.

The majority of mandarins consumed in Russia come from Abkhazia in the Caucasus, where the winter months are a busy time for local citrus farmers.
