Russian military to get next-generation weapons

Published 22 December, 2007, 15:06

Russia's Defence Ministry says the country's army will receive more state-of-the-art equipment over the next two years.

In 2008 the nuclear submarine Yury Dolgoruky, which can stay submerged for around 100 days, will join the Russian Fleet.

It will be armed with the Bulava-M ballistic system, which can launch missiles both from the surface and underwater.

The Ministry says the Army will also receive new tanks in 2009 that will outclass any foreign make.
