Political stand-off splits Golan Heights minority

Published 13 November, 2007, 08:09

One place in the Middle East has split so many families, and caused so much heartache, that it’s known as the Hill of Screaming. If families, divided by the Israeli-Syrian border at Golan Heights, scream loud enough they can communicate with long-lost relatives.

The Golan Heights hold the past and future of Israeli-Syrian relations. Israel occupied the hills 40 years ago, but when it ended local villagers found themselves on one side or the other.

Most were Druze – members of an Islamic sect dating back to the Middle Ages.

Seven years ago Israel almost cut a deal over the land with Syria.
