Russians miss Christmas frost

Published 06 January, 2007, 18:11

Russian winters are renowned for being cold and very snowy. However, this year Moscow is experiencing unprecedented high temperatures. People blame the global warming.

It's been the warmest November and December since records began and January is proving no exception.

Russians blame it on global warming, and while the scientists argue whether this season’s temperatures are a direct result, Muscovites are living an unusual winter.

“Everything is melting, it’s hard to ski,” complain the kids whose winter holidays in a skiing camp have nearly ruined.

Nevertheless, many people prefer this years’ weather anomaly to the last winter, which was the coldest in generation.  In 2005 the frost killed over a hundred people in Moscow and pushed the limits of the city's heating and power network.
