A festival, dedicated to the one hundredth anniversary of the great Russian composer Dmitry Shostakovich's birth, has ended in Moscow. The Mariinsky Theatre's orchestra from St. Petersburg performed at the closing concert.
Thousands of admirers of classical music had a chance to feel the power of Shostakovich's symphonies at the final performance. The Mariinsky Theatre orchestra is the only one in the world which performs all fifteen of Shostakovich's symphonies. That's why these musicians with Valery Gergiev, a prominent conductor and the director of the best-known theatre in Saint Petersburg, were invited to Moscow.
The orchestra didn't even need to rehearse before the Moscow concert, as it has been performing this music all year, touring all over the world – Australia, Japan, China, the United States and many European countries.
Tickets to concerts around the world were sold out, and this concert in Moscow's conservatoire was no exception.
