Secondly the US is taking into account many of their European allies point of view & interests (the older & more important allies), that having a good and healthy relation with Russia is wisely more important than creating another cold war on the behalf of the current leaders from the Baltics, Poland, Georgia & Ukraine. Having Russia as a friend is both economically and politically more benefitial than the eternal obedience of some minor European nations.
