Re internet safety. I've recently posted perfectly reasonable comments on Kommersant (they were accepted) Suddenly, there was no access to the English speaking site.
I looked at Isvestia and Mosnews in quick succession Suddenly Bam! Bam! My anti virus removed 2 Trojans (the only other time it ever needs to is when I occasionaly access Limewire) What's going on. Is the Russian media really that restrictive in this day and age?

Privacy can never be protected one hundred percent. One of the best way to protect yourself in any situation is to try to put yourself in a position not to be dependent on anyone as much as possible. When I buy something on the internet I use Visa gift cards. You load them once and then throw them away when you done. If something goes wrong you minimize your loses.I say what I want on the internet but im also ready to accept the conseqences. Then I ponder freedom of speech (man says or does what he will, but does man will what he wills). The law of nature states that people and things follow the path of least resistance. The harder you make thing the more likely they will go some where else.

What kind of privacy? Every-day privacy, spam protection, or the personal civil right to privacy from special interest groups, including those on government contract?
For the latter, the best privacy is near full disclosure. For the former, see Vijays post below. People should also know more about PGP and GnuPG and how to use it.

There are various ways including firewalls, data encryption protocols, secure packages etc that do, in various forms protect privacy, security and restrict access.

The point here is not only easier access/transfer but easier accumulation of all data, be it personal or statistical, geographical or even military secrets/knowledge of making WMD's for example!

Internet, as they say, is like Nuclear Energy- it can be used for GOOD, but consequently be extremely EVIL and do immense HARM!!

It all depends on who is using what for which.purpose.when!

The internet is probably one of the greatest inventions for data transfer ever.It can be secure and save.
That does not mean that the people who control it are.
In 2007 the UK introduced an web application system for doctors seeking specialist training.
The dumbest ever application form full of personal questions even asking your sexual orientation and nothing on the profession at all.
Then with a press of a key by someone at the health department in error. All the personal details of all doctors(except consultants)were posted on the net for everyone to read.
We cannt blame the internet for that can we?But we can blame incompetence of these in control of it.

The internet is a two-edged sword, you can get information quicker and do business faster, yet the information is easily accessed by the wrong people. Ofcourse this has been the issue since the days the computer was invented. Today everyone can have a computer.
